The princess' wedding

Waves of joy rolled through the streets,
Today, the lights would hide their pain,
They will drown in happiness so rare,
For tonight their princess will marry.

The kingdom was dressed as the bride to be,
Glorious, beautiful, an ethereal treat,
Peasants had gathered from far and near,
To bathe in showers of myriad joy.

They had heard her fame, her beauty's scent
Had captured the heart of all dreaming men,
Rumours abound of her skin glowing white,
Of the kindest heart which made it shine.

As Constant waves of song and dance
Splashed the castle walls,
Distant thunder of royal horns,
Announced the prince was near.

As he approached with steady steps,
Her gentle face did ashen,
Her lips were dry, hands were wet,
Her heart was mad in its cradle.

For she knew in hours from now,
She will cease to exist,
Forever drowned in a stranger's arms,
A doll to shine in his royal shelf.

But of all, the fear that gripped most,
Was the snaking thought she hard suppressed,
The thought of not seeing the peasant boy,
To whom she had given her heart.

It was odd, she had known,
Some chains can never be broken,
And yet the river of youth overflows,
Drowning the sane voices of the mind.

And with each step she took to the ball room,
Her heart shed its life in bits,
Trepidation giving way to silent wail, she vowed,
He will have her body, but never her soul.

The doors swung open with bellowing drums,
She tried hard not to look at the monster infront,
Savouring the last seconds of her true life,
Finally, at the king's command, she looked up.

Shock and awe spread through her
As she stumbled a few steps back,
All she could mutter was a muffled "why?"
As in front, stood her love, in royal dress.

Taking her gentle cold hands, he whispered back,
"A princess I crave not, I wanted your heart,
And I wished, you see through my royal skin,
For inside beats a human heart".
